The Crux of the Cross
This is a sermon about the relevance of the Cross for us today, why it takes darkness for us to see its relevance, and how - based on a very weird verse from the apostle Paul - it frees us from the value system and behavior of this world to be God's people engaged in the work of forgiveness.
Scripture: Colossians 2.6-15
(Additional Reading: 1 Corinthians 2.8; Galatians 1.1-5; Ephesians 2.2; Hebrews 2.14-17; Revelation 5.5-14)
is the crucifixion relevant?
what was happening on the cross?
how does Colossians 2.15 work exactly?
do we know why that is important?
"Christianity is unique. The world’s religions have certain traits in common, but until the gospel of Jesus Christ burst upon the Mediterranean world, no one in the history of human imagination had conceived of such a thing as the worship of a crucified man.” (Fleming Rutledge)
